Planning Your Outfit for At-Home Maternity Session

As a Bay Area maternity photographer, I know that your outfit choices are essential to creating the perfect atmosphere for your at-home maternity photoshoot

No matter what you choose, the key is to feel comfortable and yourself. Your clothing should enhance the cozy, personal feel of the shoot without distracting from the natural beauty of this special moment.

Here are a few options to consider:

  1. Elegant, Flowing Dresses: A loose, flowing dress in soft fabrics can create a beautiful, timeless look. Neutral tones like white, beige, or soft (even dark) pastels work wonderfully in a home setting, allowing the natural light and your bump to take center stage.

2. Comfortable Home Outfits: If you prefer something more laid-back, cozy loungewear or a matching home set can work just as well. Think about soft knits, oversized cardigans, or simple, loose tops with leggings. The goal is to feel comfortable while still looking chic.

3. Casual, Everyday Wear: You can also opt for casual, everyday clothes that reflect your personal style. A well-fitted t-shirt or a button-down shirt paired with maternity or loose jeans / soft pants can create a relaxed and intimate vibe. Keeping the colours soft and neutral will ensure the photos feel natural and warm.

For your at-home maternity photoshoot, we’ll focus on creating a warm, intimate atmosphere that reflects the comfort and coziness of your home. When it comes to choosing your outfits, I recommend selecting pieces that complement this relaxed setting.

Sometimes the smallest details tell the biggest story

Accessories and textures can elevate your look and bring more personality into your photos.
Think of a floor-length cardigan or kimono, a chunky knit with flowy pants, a plaid shirt tied at the waist, or a top with fringe or statement sleeves. These little details add charm and make your photos stand out.

And if you’d like to move away from the classic outfit choices, consider adding extraordinary elements to your look. A bold accessory, a piece with unique texture, or an unexpected color can completely transform the mood of your session. These creative touches not only highlight your character and personal style but also make your maternity photos feel distinctive and truly yours — a beautiful reflection of who you are at this moment.

Hair, Nails and Makeup

For your at-home photoshoot, it’s best to keep your hairstyle and makeup natural and cozy to fit the setting. Make sure your hair is freshly washed and styled — whether straight, with soft curls, or in a loose bun for a personal touch.

For makeup, focus on an even skin tone, lightly defined eyes, and hydrated lips with a natural gloss or balm.

As for nails, choose subtle, neutral shades or clear polish to avoid drawing attention and keep the look natural in the photos.

Preparing Your Home for a Maternity Photoshoot

When we capture your story at home, the focus should always be on you — not on distracting details in the background. A few simple steps will help create a clean, harmonious setting that enhances your photos rather than pulling attention away.

Before our session, I’ll ask you to send me a few photos or short video clips of the rooms where we’ll be shooting. This helps me plan the scenes in advance, think through the light and angles, so I don’t spend extra time on it during the session.

Start by clearing away items that might look busy or out of place in the frame.
In the kitchen, try to keep countertops tidy — put away small appliances, dishes, or random objects. Hide trash bins, chargers, and visible cords whenever possible.

Pay special attention to bedside tables. These surfaces often collect the little things of everyday life — books, glasses, creams, or water bottles. If the items look balanced and natural in your space, they can stay, but otherwise it’s best to simplify.

And finally, think about your bedding. Since many intimate moments are photographed in the bedroom, neutral sheets and a simple bedspread are the best choice. Avoid bold prints or bright colors — subtle textures or very fine patterns work well, keeping the spotlight on you rather than the linens.

What to Expect on the Day of the Shoot

Feeling a little nervous is perfectly normal. Most of us aren’t used to being in front of a camera, and that’s completely okay. My job is to guide you through every step so you never have to worry about how to pose or where to look. I want this to be an enjoyable, stress-free experience for you.

Before the session, we’ll also talk about everyday activities from your life that we can weave into the shoot. These little rituals make the experience more natural, fluid, and candid.

It might be as simple as brewing your morning coffee, squeezing fresh orange juice for breakfast, looking through family albums, changing bed linens together, hanging artwork, or even setting up a crib for your baby. Whatever feels genuine to you can become a meaningful part of your story.

The magic happens when you let go of the idea of “performing” for the camera. The less you try to pose and the more you simply focus on being yourself — enjoying the moment, connecting with your loved ones, and trusting me and the process — the more authentic and beautiful your photos will be. Together, we’ll capture both timeless portraits and candid moments that truly feel like home.
